There is an idea that every career is meant to be a development role. I see it in the military, where they are trying to develop each person's potential toward being a resource for the benefit of the whole. you rise developmentally, gaining experience, training, and education toward a pinnacle.

I have typically been a job type - and exchange of time for money. I left child development as a field for something more immediately lucrative, for example. Perhaps Lucky Carter saw it more clearly than I did. When I was acting as a schoolteacher, he wasn't going to renew my contract (not that I wanted to do so) and softened the blow by saying that I would make more money in industry, which was correct. Smart fellow that Lucky, though I'm unsure he wasn't just saying the easiest thing to get me out of his school. I was no teacher, and he knew it.
