I have always thought that it was a very basic conceit to take what works for me and try to project that upon others. The concept of the republic is that essentially one person can actually represent a group, geographical (why did we think this works - that similarly minded people will congregate physically?) or ideological. The Internet allows us to assemble based more on thoughts and beliefs than geography and it may be a useful exercise to develop governance extra-geographically.
I have always found the terra nullis concept of being cast out of the city or culture to be a useful thing. We live in a world that has no more terra nullis - everything and everywhere is governed by some nearby metropolis that forces its sensibilities on a totally “other” place.
