If one wants purpose and meaning in life, one has to look not much beyond Jesus' parable of the talents and see the reward of earning the Lord's trust in doing his work.

Talents

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Both of the servants in this parable who doubled their “talents” (whatever those are variously interpreted to be) are described as “good and faithful”. Basically, make good use with whatever you have been given. This shows “the lord” that you are worthy of his trust in handling larger responsibilities.

The reward for being good and faithful in the Lord's way is that he will make you a ruler over many things, which I equate with exaltation, or becoming as God.

Raising a Family as a Test of your Trustworthiness

God has entrusted you with a few things – perhaps a piece of his land, a spouse and a handful of children, and a few “talents”. The basic way to approach life is to marry a spouse, use your “talents” to provide for your family, birth and raise some children, and make a home dedicated to God's purposes. Doing this yourself, with advice from your parents, and then advising your own children in doing the same thing - this can easily fill an entire lifetime and prove to God that you are worthy of his trust.

If we take the opportunities we have for expansion and growth and build on them in God's interests and manner, we will be declared “good and faithful servants”. As a reward for becoming someone God trusts with his gifts, he will make you a “ruler over many things”, not just a servant but raised to being as God who rules over many things, which is “the joy of thy lord.”

In the end, if God finds that he can trust you with the few things you have control over in this earth life, he will let you rule over many things as he does in the eternities. If we approach our life with the purpose of gaining the Lord's trust through our faithfulness in expanding what we have already been given, we will enjoy a meaningful life and be richly rewarded beyond this life!
